Bighorn Sheep have hoofs shaped like suction cups which allow them to climb steep rocky slopes to escape their predators. Rams are generally not seen with the ewes and lambs except during mating season in the Fall. Bands of bighorn rams are governed by a dominance hierarchy where the rams with larger horns are dominant and those with smaller horns are subordinate. Click to enlarge the Bighorn Ram.
Male elk, or bulls, gather their harems of females during the Fall mating season. Referred to as Wapiti by American Indians, the bulls challenge other males with a call known as bugling. Click to enlarge Elk.
Curious creatures, marmots are also known as whistle pigs for the high-pitched sound they make.

Marmots make their homes in the rocks at higher elevations and they feast on meadow grasses all Summer.
A bird with extremely keen eyesight, the Red-tailed Hawk can spot a mouse up to a half-mile away. This beautiful bird can be found from Alaska all the way to Panama. Click to enlarge the Red-tailed Hawk.
At home on steep cliff faces, mountain goats are white with black horns. One of the few animals that remain white all year, they stay high in the mountains even during winter and forage for small plants in rock crevices which have blown free of snow. Click to enlarge the Rocky Mountain Goats.
