Hovenweep National Monument was established in 1923 and includes the main ruins of Little Ruin Canyon known as the Square Tower Group as well as many outlying ruins. Hovenweep is a Ute word meaning deserted valley. Cajon Mesa covers an area from Pleasant View, Colorado, to the San Juan River in Utah. It is on this desert mesa that the Ancestral Puebloans built their canyon-head ruins. Click to enlarge 4 views of Hovenweep
