The San Juan Mountains are the heart of southwestern Colorado. Much of the land in the San Juans is preserved as National Forest and BLM land. Recreational uses include hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, hunting, 4-wheeling, horseback riding, rafting, skiing, snowshoeing, ice climbing, and snow mobiling. Engineer Mountain is only 12,968 feet but looms over the surrounding area because of its isolation.
The Twilight Peaks are visible from Highway 550 near Purgatory Ski Area. Part of the San Juan Mountains, they get their name from the spectacular sunsets that leave them shining in the last glow of the sun while the rest of the area lies in shadow. Click to enlarge Twilight Peaks
