Hard-rock mining has been a part of Southwestern Colorado's heritage since the early 1870s. After treaties were signed with the Ute Indians, prospectors rushed to the area. In 1874, almost 2000 claims were filed. Evidence of this part of our history remains in the mine portals, boarding houses, mills and abandoned villages that dot the hillsides.
