In this part of Utah, the Entrada Sandstone has varying amounts of calcium carbonate cement. This varying cement content allow some areas to resist erosion more than others. The resulting fins, arches and sculpted rock give Arches National Park its unique landscapes. Click to enlarge Arches National Park.Sunrise is always spectacular in Bryce Canyon. Weathered limestone forms the spires for which Bryce Canyon National Park is famous. Iron and manganese oxides give the rocks their red, yellow, brown, and lavender hues. Not a true canyon, Bryce Canyon is actually a series of amphitheaters on the edge of a plateau. Click to enlarge Bryce Canyon.
Inspiration Point is one of the most beautiful views of Bryce Canyon National Park. Weathered limestone forms the spires for which the Park is famous. The Needles District is named for the red and white banded rock pinnacles that dominate the landscape. Chestler Park is a 960-acre grassy meadow surrounded by these spires of Cedar Mesa sandstone. Click to enlarge Chestler Park.
Dead Horse Point lies two thousand feet above the Colorado River on a high promontory. It is surrounded by steep cliffs which are slowly being eroded away. According to legend, a herd of wild horses were corralled on the point and forgotten. They died of thirst within sight of the river below. Click to enlarge Dead Horse Point.
One of the most spectacular arches in the world, Delicate Arch can be viewed from either of two hiking trails. In this part of Utah, the Entrada Sandstone has varying amounts of calcium carbonate cement. This varying cement content allow some areas to resist erosion more than others. The resulting fins, arches and sculpted rock give Arches National Park its unique landscapes. More than 200 stone arches can be found in the narrow fins of coral-colored rock. From the end of the Island in the Sky road, the Grand View Trail leads to the southern-most overlook in the Island in the Sky District. From here, the vista is indeed a grand view of how nature has worked to transform the plains into magnificent canyons, mesas, buttes, fins, and arches. Click to enlarge Grand View Point.
Canyonlands National Park comprises three distinctly different districts geographically divided by the Colorado and the Green Rivers. This view is from the Fort Bottom area.

A mesa of land between the Green and the Colorado Rivers, the Island in the Sky District offers incredible vistas of canyon country. From the viewpoints on top of the mesa, you can see the mighty rivers cutting their way through the sandstone cliffs. In the distance are the majestic La Salle mountains. Click to enlarge Island in the Sky.
The Maze District is the most remote section of Canyonlands. Distances here are measured in hours instead of miles; a 5-mile stretch of road can take 3 hours to drive. The Land of Standing Rocks is a mesa dominated by diverse towers, walls, and spires that overlooks the "30-square mile puzzle in sandstone" known as the Maze. Click to enlarge the Land of Standing Rocks.
The largest arch in the park, Landscape Arch stands 105 feet (32 meters) high and is 291 feet (89 meters) at its base.

Named by Spanish explorers, Mesa Verde, or the green table, sits on a high plateau about 2000 feet above the valley. Piñon and juniper forests top the mesa which is cut by many canyons. It is here on the mesa tops and in the canyon alcoves that Ancestral Puebloan people, also known as the Anasazi, made their homes. Click to enlarge Mesa Verde

This volcanic uplift resembles a giant Ute warrior lying on his back. A feathered headdress streams northward from his reclining head; arms are folded carefully across his chest, a blanket covers him from his chin to his toes. Click to enlarge Sleeping Ute
According to Ute Mountain Ute legend, a Warrior God came to help the people fight against the Evil Ones. A tremendous battle followed and as they stepped hard upon the earth and braced themselves to fight, their feet pushed the land into mountains, mesas, and valleys. Click to enlarge Sleeping Ute
